MISA-SA ALERTS & STATEMENTS

MISA categorises the abuse of the media into eleven distinct categories called Alerts.

Alerts are an international record of press freedom abuses that are a yardstick of a country's respect for freedom of the media and freedom of expression.

MISA will issue an alert: if a journalist is killed in the line of duty; if s/he is physically assaulted or wounded; if the home of a journalist or a media outlet is raided, bombed or sabotaged; if a media worker is unlawfully detained for doing his job; if a journalist is unfairly sentenced to a prison term or fine; if journalists are threatened by public officials or interrogated on their sources; if journalists are expelled either from a country or prevented from entering or leaving a country or from moving around freely to work; if the media is censored by gagging orders, banning, civil litigation or confiscation of material; if harsh laws are developed which fetter media freedom and freedom of expression and when the media score a victory by achieving an outcome that advances media freedom.

Archived copies of Alerts and Statements made by MISA-SA are available to non-members on this site at the end of every month. Archived documents is in print-friendly PDF-format. To download you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.
